Update on Saldi, April 2024
Saldi, 18 years old, has been bedridden for 3 years due to complications from his previous leprosy infection. We have been caring for him since December 2022 and he now lives in the ward of the Jongaya Leprosy Settlement in Makassar. Thanks to the help of Dr Wim Theuvenet, the severe ulcers that covered his body are now a thing of the past! However, both his knees are stiffened at a 20-degree angle and he cannot straighten them. Our hope now is conservative stretching and an operation at the end of 2024.
Latest update:
Since his ulcers have healed, Saldi has made steady progress. Thanks to our young team and their fundraising skills, he now has a proper wheelchair! He no longer hides away in his bed, but goes out every day and takes part in our ongoing scholar training sessions! English is his favourite subject! He joint us to the mountains and he handed flowers to Miss Supranational!
We now need to start thinking with him about what skills he could learn to earn a living one day. Any ideas? Contact us!
We would like to thank for your ongoing support:
- The Leprosy Mission Netherlands (TLM NL) and Dr Wim Theuvenet.
- Somoi Makassar, a Dutch NGO that helps children with disabilities, which covers Saldi’s care and food for one year!
- Dr Iswahyudi from RSTC and Dr Ira Nong from RS Wahidin for their concern about Saldi’s knees.
- Sasakwa Health Foundation and their Scholar Program.
