Update on Saldi, January 2025
Saldi, 19, who had suffered severe reactions lives in the “Rumah Aman” (Safe house) in Jongaya leprosy settlement since December 2022. Thanks to the care of his peers and many others, he has no wounds anymore although his knees are still contracted. We received the donation of a wheelchair and with this, Saldi is mobile again. Since June 2024, he regularly joined us in our office, taking over small tasks, and even attended several events outside Makassar.
Latest update:
During a further examination of his knees in November we learnt that the prospects of an operation are not good and the risk of amputation is high. This has greatly reduced Saldi’s motivation and he has withdrawn to the ward and spends his days in bed. We hope that we can place him in a vocational training centre run by the Ministry of Social Affairs. We are keeping our fingers crossed for Saldi in 2025.
We would like to thank for your ongoing support:
- The Leprosy Mission Netherlands (TLM NL) and Dr Wim Theuvenet.
- Somoi Makassar, a Dutch NGO that helps children with disabilities, which covers Saldi’s care and food for one year!
- Dr Iswahyudi from RSTC and Dr Ira Nong from RS Wahidin for their concern about Saldi’s knees.
Visit to the Panti Sosial Bina Daksa Wirajaya Makassar rehabilitation centre on 3 December to show Saldi vocational training opportunities.
