Message from the Team –
The year 2024 ended with the dreadful news of the death of Fichrin Hidayat, 19 years young, our friend, companion, leader of PerMaTa in Pangkep and enthusiastic participant in the SHF scholar programme. We mourn Fich
rin but we also celebrate those young people affected who have overcome the challenges that leprosy still presents today. Yusniati is one of them, who only a year ago did not dare to leave her home, ashamed of her condition, but thanks to PerMaTa she was able to develop into a courageous and tireless advocate for the rights of those affected by leprosy. Fichrin’s spirit will live with us all in this fight!
We have been busy! We continued our activities supported by Misereor Germany and Sasakawa Health Foundation (SHF) to visit and support young people affected by leprosy and are now building young teams in 7 districts. We started a pilot project by SHF to help developing leaders and role models in the cause of leprosy, the ‘Scholar Program’. And for the third time we welcomed Dr Wim Theuvenet and Dr Ton Schreuders, with the support of The Leprosy Mission Netherlands, for training in reconstructive surgery, this time in Toraja and in Ambon.
We received donations from individual supporters to help people in need, and this commitment and trust means a lot to us: Liesbeth Mieras, The Ridder Family, Rao Pemmaraju, Wim Theuvenet, Diana Liben, Sri Wahyudi and Harry van Nie from Somoi Makassar.
We are immensely grateful to all our supporters that shared our goals, placed their trust in us, made our work possible. We also thank the district and provincial governments who welcome, value, support and complement our work! There is still a lot to do, many challenges to overcome. We hope for a good cooperation also in the next year!
