From Project to Purpose: PerMaTa Bantaeng Steps Into Autonomy

September 2025. From Project to Purpose: PerMaTa Bantaeng Steps Into Autonomy:

We visited Bantaeng district to mark the closing phase of the Misereor/SHF-supported multi-district project in this particular district. During 3 years of dedicated work, PerMaTa Bantaeng was formed as a remarkable team of young people affected by leprosy who have grown into a committed, community-driven force. Over the years, they’ve built trust, advocated for their peers, and collaborated with local institutions to improve access to care and reduce stigma. With the project now phasing out, PerMaTa Bantaeng is ready to continue supporting others affected autonomously, an inspiring example of empowerment in action. Of course, we will continue to provide guidance and technical support as needed.

At our visit we met with the District Health Office and the Social Services Office to reflect, express gratitude for their support, and plan for sustainable next steps. The Social Services Office expressed strong interest in future collaboration, especially through their community-based system of facilitators which deploys 67 social workers across villages.

During our visit, we coordinated a home intervention for Rini, a young woman facing severe ENL complications. Together with the local leprosy health worker and village leaders, steps were taken to secure her referral to hospital care. This case highlighted the importance of local networks and the compassion that drives PerMaTa’s work.

PerMaTa branches are also supported by YDTI in 9 other districts.

As the project funding concludes, the spirit of PerMaTa continues—stronger, more connected, and more determined than ever.
