From 11–26 July 2025, Dr. Wim Theuvenet conducted his fourth visit to South Sulawesi as part of the TLM-supported reconstructive surgery training program. Activities were carried out in Toraja (Elim Hospital) and Makassar (Tadjuddin Chalid Hospital/RSTC), with additional visits to Maros and Sinjai districts. During this time, a total of 26 individuals—among them several children with non-leprosy-related disabilities—were examined and received consultations. Reconstructive surgery was performed on 7 young people, including two children with non-leprosy disabilities. One additional patient received a non-invasive procedure for finger joint mobility, and 8 others underwent ulcer cleaning and wound care interventions.
A key challenge encountered was the difficulty in securing surgical candidates. Several individuals declined surgery due to economic constraints, family pressures, and fear—particularly as reconstructive surgery remains poorly understood and unfamiliar in many communities. However, Dr. Wim was able to examine many individuals who were not yet ready for surgery, and this early screening process creates the potential to prepare and refer suitable candidates to Dr. Iswahyudi in the coming year, contributing to his continued surgical training, supporting the long-term goal of building sustainable surgical capacity in the region.
Our sincere thanks to Dr. Wim and TLM Netherlands for their generous and unwavering support in helping people affected by leprosy.
